A New City, N.Y., woman was struck by lightning in Monmouth Beach this evening.She was sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.

The woman, 48, whose name was not released pending notification of family, was on top of the sea wall in the north end of the borough near Sunset Lane when she was struck by lightning, Monmouth Beach police Lt. Dennis Cahill said.

Police, fire and EMS responded to the scene and transported the woman to Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, Cahill said.

The incident took place during a brief, but severe storm that has left thousands on the Shore without power this evening, according to Jersey Central Power and Light’s website.

In Monmouth County, 39,395 residents were affected by the outages as of 9 p.m. Freehold Township was hit hardest with nearly 10,000 residents without power and Howell had about 8,600 residents without power, according to the company’s outage map.

AMC Loews Freehold Metroplex lost power during the storm and movie-goers were asked to leave the theater. Portions of the Freehold Raceway Mall, which is next to the theater, also lost power during the storm.
