Atlantic City's largest casino workers union has sued the city government.

Local 54 of the UNITE HERE union says the city erred when it decided last month not to put two referenda on the ballot.

It filed the suit on Monday.

The union wanted voters to have a say on rules that would have banned one casino's plans to hire many employees to terms of four to six years. The second measure would have required casinos provide sick leave and other employee benefits.

City officials said last month that the proposals would have handcuffed the city council and that the organizers did not collect enough signatures.

Mayor Lorenzo Langford did not immediately return a call Monday seeking comment.
