AUGUSTA — An 11-month-old boy was struck by a foul ball at an independent league baseball game on Wednesday.

The line drive struck the child in the right eye during a Sussex County Miners game at Skylands Stadium around 7:30 p.m, according to State Police spokesman Lt. Ted Schafer. The boy was seated in a stroller.

According to the team's Mixlr account, the boy and his family were section DD, located in back of home plate along the first base line.

A picture of the field on the stadium's Facebook page shows a high fence on the wall between the field and the fans, but no protective netting over the area.

The boy was conscious and alert and flown to University Hospital in Newark. Hospital spokesman Rick Remington said the child was in stable condition on Thursday morning.

A person who answered the phone in the team's front office at Skylands Stadium on Thursday morning said the Miners did not have a comment about the incident.

The Miners are an independent team playing in the CanAm League.
