A hair-raising 12 hours finally had a happy ending for one scared dog in northern New Jersey. Police from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey say they got a call from construction workers on the lower level of the George Washington Bridge Thursday morning about a dog running loose in traffic.

They were able to corral the pooch, named "Charlie," on the span's north catwalk and bring him to an animal hospital in Cliffside Park to reunite him with his owner.

Animal control officials say the dog ran away from his home in Leonia Wednesday night after being spooked by Fourth of July fireworks. Somewhere in his travels he was sprayed by a skunk and possibly bitten by the animal as well.
