A three-car motor vehicle accident caused police in Freehold to shut down a section of Route 9 in both directions just south of County Road 522 near Throckmorton Street Thursday evening.

Freehold police told NJ 101.5 that the crash has resulted in downed wires and a possible transformer fire. Police say crews from JCP&L arrived at the scene to deal with a wires and transformer issue. It is not yet known if there are any injuries, and police say officers and emergency crews are still assessing the situation.

Traffic in both directions of the busy roadway are completely closed and authorities do not yet know how long the closures will last. Crews are in the process of investigating the crash and working to divert traffic as the evening rush hour continues.

According to 511NY-New Jersey, the crash includes an overturned vehicle and a downed utility pole.
