Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams said a wire near the Portal Bridge was causing a problem that led to single tracking in Secaucus. The repairs were complete around 3 p.m., according to Abrams.
PATH is accepting NJ Transit rail tickets and passes at Newark Penn Station and 33rd Street as an alternative.
NJ Transit riders took to Twitter to share their tales of trains just sitting or not going very far.
