NEWARK — A retired city police officer said he was being robbed when he shot another man, the Union County Prosecutor's Office said.

Acting Prosecutor Thomas K. Isenhour said the incident happened around 5 a.m. on Wednesday when police in Elizabeth were called to a 24-hour car wash. At that time they said they found both the robbery victim and the man who had been shot.

Isenhour said investigators at the scene determined the retired officer was being physically assaulted by 23-year-old Krishad Jones of Newark before shooting him.

Jones was taken to University Hospital in Newark. He was being held in police custody at the hospital facing a count of second-degree robbery.

Isenhour encouraged anyone with information about the case to contact Detective Dennis Donovan at 732-232-2049.
