WASHINGTON — A brand of organic cashews and almonds sold only in New Jersey is being recalled.

Hampton Farms voluntarily recalled Ava’s Brand Organic Roasted Unsalted Cashews and Ava’s Brand Organic Roasted Unsalted Almonds because of possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

There have been no reported cases and the recall is being done out of caution, according to Hampton Farms.
