A Scotch Plains police officer delivered the seventh baby of his police career — and 10th overall, counting time as an EMT and a Radio Shack employee — when he was dispatched to the home of a woman going into labor early Friday morning.

Vivian Isabel entered the world five weeks early with help from Officer Brian Cheney, who told NJ.com he was specifically assigned to the home along with officer James Richie because of his baby-delivering expertise.

"I've delivered them in the backseat of cars, on couches," Cheney reportedly said.. "As soon as they say, 'I think I'm having my baby now' they automatically dispatch me!" He also got help from members of the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad.

The baby, who weighed 5 pounds and 11 ounces, and her mother are doing well, according to the report. Richie told NJ.com he has had "plenty of close calls" in his 15-year career but this was his first actual delivery.
