HAMILTON — Authorities say a man shot and killed by an off-duty corrections officer outside the latter's home was under a domestic violence restraining order that barred him from contacting the officer's girlfriend.

Mercer County prosecutors say Dominic Neal was found at the officer's township home around 4 a.m. Saturday. He was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

The officer, identified by NJ Advance Media as Niam K. Camp, told investigators he saw Neal walking up the path to his home and said Neal had one hand on his waistband as he reached out for the door handle.

The officer told Neal to stop but he didn't. The officer then fired three or four shots through the glass of his front door.

Camp told police he was going to the porch of his Vicky Court home to smoke a cigarette when he saw Neal approach his walkway with his head covered and face down.

The officer and his girlfriend were both home but were not hurt. No charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing.

Camp is a corrections officer with the state Department of Correction with 12 years of experience, according to pension records.
