BAYONNE — Authorities say a fast-moving fire that severely damaged a Bayonne building left two firefighters injured and 45 residents displaced.

Fire officials say the fire began around 1 a.m. Saturday, apparently in a trash area in the back of the building on Avenue C. The fire then grew and spread up the walls into the top floor and cockloft of the structure, which housed a laundromat and several apartments.

Firefighters from Bayonne and several nearby towns battled the blaze for a few hours before it was contained.

Officials say two firefighters fell when the building's cockloft collapsed. Both were being treated at a hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

No residents were hurt in the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
