NFL Insider Ian Rappaport reports that Sanchez, who suffered a shoulder injury in an exhibition game against the Giants, will face a 4-6 month recovery after surgery on his torn labrum.

Geno Smith was named the starter going into the regular season as Sanchez was placed on injured reserve.

A number of NFL reporters believe this spells the end of Sanchez's Jets career. His contract goes through 2016 but believe he will be released prior to the 2014 season. The Jets also have inexperienced backup Matt Simms or veteran Brady Quinn on their current roster.

Ironically, during a press conference on Monday, Jets head coach Rex Ryan said "It's not a thought at this point right now" to bench Smith after he was intercepted twice and lost two fumbles in the team's 38-13 loss at Tennessee on Sunday, giving him 11 turnovers — eight interceptions, three lost fumbles — through four games.
