ALPINE — Police say a Brooklyn man who apparently got out of his minivan on a New Jersey parkway because he thought he had hit an animal was struck and killed by a car.

Palisades Interstate Parkway police said the 41-year-old man, whose name wasn't released, was heading north on the parkway in Alpine just before the New York state line on Thursday.

Police said investigators believe the man stopped because he thought he may have struck a small animal. They say he was standing in the right lane when he was hit by a car.

Police said he had no vital signs when officers arrived, and he was pronounced dead at Nyack Hospital.

Accident investigators with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the county sheriff's office are looking into the accident, but no charges were immediately filed.
