LONG BRANCH — A suspect was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a man in the front yard of his home late Sunday.

Jeffrey S. Williams, 29, of Long Branch, was arrested Thursday in connection with the death of Hector C. Mejia, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.

Mejia was found by his wife bleeding in front of their Liberty Street home. She called Long Branch police who found Mejia near the front door with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead just before midnight.

Williams was also charged with first-degree felony murder, first-degree robbery, second-degree possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.

Gramiccioni did not disclose why Williams was at the house or a motive for the shooting.

Keansburg and Lakewood police also assisted with the investigation.
