KEYPORT — A total of eight firefighters and a Salvation Army worker were hospitalized with minor injuries as a result of a five-alarm fire that tore through three buildings Friday evening.

Another 33 firefighters also were treated for minor injuries on the scene, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office said Saturday.

Officials have not said what may have caused the fire, which appears to have started in a large warehouse on West Front Street in this shore town's business district.

One of the lost buildings was the home of Jennifer DeMeo, a veterinarian at the Atlantic Highlands Animal Hospital. Her three cats perished in the blaze. Her neighbor also lost her home, according to a GoFundMe page set up to collect donations for the two residents. As of early Saturday evening, the page had raised $9,775 from 84 people.

The Keyport First Aid Squad, at 1927 Atlantic St., also was asking for donations of bottled water to replenish the supply spent by firefighters and volunteers on Friday.
