The decision by the Phillipsburg School Board to ban home schooled students from participating in sports couldn’t be more wrong on so many levels.First off, Since their parents are paying taxes , they are entitled whether they are there for the education or not. Secondly, what better way to get a home schooled student interested in coming to school than to make him or her feel a part of something, and third, it could also make the team better.

Gian Paul Gonzales

Case in point, Gian Paul Gonzales. who went from being home schooled to an All American basketball player at Montclair State. During his 3 year career, Gonzales scored nearly 14,000 points and was the 2006 NJAC Male Athlete of the year.

Gonzales, now an assistant coach at Montclair, also coaches basketball at Kings college on New York, teaches history in Union City where he’s on the Board of Education, and founded 4-One .

Many remember Gonzales locker room speech he gave to the Giants before their game with the Jets last December that started the “All-In motto that propelled Big Blue to win the Super Bowl.

Not for nothing, but if I were on the Phillipsburg School board and there was a Gian Paul Gonzales being home schooled in my district, I’d want him on my team.
