Autumn truly is my favorite season. From the wide variety of warm-to-cool weather conditions, to the beautiful changing leaves, to football, to everything apple and pumpkin spice, this time of year isn't about the "death" of summer or the "doom" of impending winter. It is about celebrating the fact that New Jersey's temperate climate allows for four distinct seasons, along with the varied activities that accompany each of them.

So far this season, I have authored an ultimate bucket list of fall attractions in New Jersey, focused on foliage, harvest season, and other related destinations. I also spotlighted some of the Garden State's best spooky, scary Halloween attractions.

This time around, I want to give suggestions for great fall day trips in New Jersey. Some are perfect for this time of year, specifically. Some are great ideas for any season and any weather. All of them are slightly off-beat, but also guaranteed to be family-friendly and able to be accomplished in one day or less. (For the record, I am not going to include any of the wonderful destinations in my previous two fall-tastic articles!)

This article is part of a special series brought to you by the New Jersey Division of Travel and Tourism.

The New Jersey Hall of Fame — East Rutherford

Any time of year is a great time to celebrate New Jersey pride, of course. But the volatile weather of a New Jersey fall may have you seeking indoor activities. The New Jersey Hall of Fame at American Dream highlights Garden State greats through interactive, family-friendly exhibits. From sports legends to music icons to scientists to historical figures, more than 300 inductees are on display. (Plus, if you have never visited the grand American Dream mall, I promise you can spend an entire week there and still not experience everything!)

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area — Warren & Sussex counties

Few places rival the Delaware Water Gap for leaf-peeping in fall, when the rolling hills and river valleys of northwestern New Jersey pop with color. This corner of the state is home to New Jersey's 72-mile stretch of the legendary Appalachian Trail. Hike Mount Tammany for sweeping vistas or take a leisurely drive along Old Mine Road to experience the foliage without breaking a sweat. It's classic fall outdoor recreation at its best.

Hidden Spring Lavender & Alpaca Farm — Skillman

Did you ever want to walk an alpaca? How about paint with an alpaca? How about purchase some great alpaca and lavender products? Tucked away in Somerset County, Hidden Spring Lavender & Alpaca Farm is a serene fall escape. While lavender season peaks in summer to early autumn, the cooler weather of late fall is perfect for meeting the farm’s resident alpacas. It’s a quirky, peaceful spot that combines nature, animals, and handmade goods.

Adventure Aquarium — Camden

When the cold autumn wind blows across the Delaware River, you can head indoors to Adventure Aquarium for a day trip under the sea. Sharks, hippos, and colorful marine life provide year-round wonder. (Don't miss my personal favorite, the 40-foot shark tunnel!) Also not to be missed is the Battleship New Jersey, right next door along the Camden waterfront.

Hot Sand Glassblowing Studio — Asbury Park

In summer, Asbury Park is lively and vibrant. In the fall, there's still plenty of activity, but the crowds thin out, making it easier to explore. Hot Sand lets visitors try their hand at glassblowing. From pumpkins to ornaments, the creations are perfect for the season. Afterwards, enjoy the quieter boardwalk and a stroll by the ocean in the brisk autumn air.

Stroll the Morristown Green — Morristown

In the heart of historic Morristown, the Green becomes a leafy showpiece in fall. The square is surrounded by shops, cafés, and Revolutionary War history, making it a natural hub for a cozy autumn day trip. Don't-miss stops include Morristown National Historical Park, Mayo Performing Arts Center, Morris Museum, and Frelinghuysen Arboretum. Seasonal events and festivals add to the charm this time of year.

Explore Princeton's Past and Present — Princeton

Princeton truly shines in autumn, with ivy-covered stone buildings and tree-lined streets painted in warm colors. On the hallowed grounds of Princeton University, take a campus tour or visit the soon-to-be-reopened Princeton University Art Museum. Nassau Street is one of my favorite promenades in all of New Jersey to stroll for shopping and dining.

Cape May County Park & Zoo — Cape May

Many think of zoos as a classic summertime visitor attraction. But they can be ferociously hot during that time of year. In fall? Beautiful, less busy, and much more comfortable! At Cape May County Park & Zoo, the giraffes and zebras in the back of the park are incredible, and my kids' favorites include the kangaroos and giant tortoises. Absolutely worth the drive down to exit 11 on the Parkway, the zoo is open every day of the year except Christmas. Admission is free, although donations are accepted and encouraged.
