"Don't Make Me Over" by Sybil

(#13 last week) This was New Jersey-born Sybil Lynch's only pop chart appearance, but she did have three other R&B chart hits, including another Dionne Warwick cover, "Walk On By". "Don't Make Me Over" has also been recorded by, among others, Neil Diamond, Petula Clark & Thelma Houston. This was a good example of the "New Jack Swing" sound popular in the late 80s/early 90s in R&B.

"If I Could Turn Back Time" by Cher

(#6 last week) The years 1987-88-89 were a big comeback time from Cher, culminating with this huge it, 24 years after her first ("I Got You Babe"). Written by the legendary Diane Warren, it wasn't offered first to Cher, and when she WAS offered it, she initially turned it down. Warren literally got down her knees and begged Cher to record it.

"Bust A Move" by Young MC

(#16 last week) One of rap's early crossovers, this sampled, among other songs, the 1971 instrumental hit "Scorpio" from Dennis Coffey. Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea plays the bass guitar here. Grammy winner for Best Rap Performance.

"Mixed Emotions" by The Rolling Stones

(#8 last week) Most critics disliked this first single from the "Steel Wheels" album, but it sounds OK to my ears after not hearing it for many years. Among the backup singers, LaBelle's Sarah Dash.

"Sowing The Seeds Of Love" by Tears For Fears

(#9 last week) This song really stood out among the hits of 1989, but to veteran listeners, it was recognized as a direct homage to the Beatles 1967-68 era. A nice final hit for this British duo.

"Back To Life" by Soul II Soul

(#7 last week) Caron Wheeler, lead singer for this British soul band's two American hits, was actually just a guest vocalist on the album and never sang with the group again. Maybe they should have hired her? :-)

    "Heaven" by Warrant

(#3 last week) This is the forgotten "Heaven". Everyone remembers "Heaven" from Bryan Adams, but not many this glam rock power ballad.

  • 3

"Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" by Milli Vanilli

(#1 last week; was #1 for 2 weeks) Fake singers. So what? Very catchy pop.

  • 2

"Miss You Much" by Janet Jackson

(#4 last week) The national #1 hit of the year. Two Grammy nominations. At this point of her career, you couldn't get any hotter than Ms. Jackson.

  • 1

    "Cherish" by Madonna

(#2 last week; 1st week at #1) Third single from the "Like A Prayer" album, and the third straight #1 single locally! Three different songs called "Cherish", and all hit #1 here! The Association in 1966 and Kool & The Gang in 1985 were the others.
