This weekend we checked out Scarlet Night, a beer from Demented Brewing in Middlesex. Demented pays homage to nearby Rutgers University with their red ale, giving it a similar name as the Rutgers sports team.

It also fits the dark naming convention they give to their beers as it's able to hang with the other beers such as: Dementia, Beowolf, or Night-mare. At first look its menacing dark red color make you think you're in for a strong punch in the face, but it's mostly all bark and little bite.

It's a nicely balanced and drinkable red ale, medium bodied, roasty in all the right ways with just a touch of a hop presence. We all quite enjoyed this one and we think you will too.

If you want to find this beer or others from Demented Brewing look no further than their handy beer finding map on their website. Owner Thomas Zuber comes from a background in computer science and it really shows with this great feature.

Demented was part of our 32 NJ Brewery Bracket unfortunately they got knocked out in the second round of voting. Which may be an even bigger homage to Rutgers sports than the whole name thing. (As a Rutgers grad I can say these things.) If you want to vote for the remaining four breweries you can do so by clicking the button below. Can't wait to see who New Jersey picks as their favorite brewery.
