Lace up and walk to support suicide awareness and prevention this fall with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention!

Whether it's the stress from a high risk job, a family disruption or a mental health issue, people need help and my friends at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention are doing just that. You know I don't get involved in strictly 'awareness' campaigns. I know you are aware of the epidemic of suicide, especially the disturbing trend among young people.

What we need is action. And that action is to make sure those who need help are aware of the resources available to them, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to action and offering actual solutions to save lives. To that end, they are sponsoring walks throughout New Jersey.

Friends and family of someone who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts often aren't sure how to lend support beyond reassuring that person how important they are to you. Participating in a walk is a simple to show solidarity, fight the stigma of mental health issues, and raise awareness about prevention.

We need your help. I participated Saturday, Sept. 21 in Chatham for the Out of Darkness walk. There are several walks remaining in our area, and this one might be closest to you:

What: Middlesex County  Out of Darkness Walk
When: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 3
Where: Thompson Park, Jamesburg, NJ
