Leftover permits will be put on sale on November 14th. This year's hunt is scheduled for December 9th through December 14th.

State environmental officials say the annual hunt aims to control the state's black bear population, which was nearing 3,000 in the hunting area last year. Not everyone is in favor of killing the bears - the hunt always draws protesters opposed to the practice. About 6,400 people participated in the hunt last year, and state environmental officials say 285 bears were killed during the 6 day hunt.
