Authorities are hunting for a hit-and-run driver who killed two pedestrians as they attempted to cross a highway in Clifton.

The accident occurred just before 4 a.m. Saturday on Route 46 in Clifton.

The victims were identified only as a 29-year-old Passaic woman and a 36-year-old Brooklyn, N.Y. man. Details on their injuries were not immediately disclosed, and both were pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after the crash occurred.

Authorities were trying to determine why the two were in the area and where they may have been headed when they were struck. A witness saw the accident, but could provide little detail on the car, which quickly fled the scene.

No other injuries were reported in the accident.
