UNION TOWNSHIP — A 17-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder in Sunday's shooting death of 19-year-old Jose Diago.

Acting Union County Prosecutor Thomas Isenhour said the teen shot Diago, on the 700 block of Trotting Road in Union Township around 2 p.m. He was later arrested and also charged with second-degree weapons offenses. Diago was pronounced dead at the scene.

Willy Rodriguez-Gil, 22 and also of Union Township, was also arrested and charged with first-degree robbery.

Isenhour did not provide a motive for the shooting or disclose whether Rodriquez-Gil had a role role in the shooting.

The teen’s uncle, Candido Morales-Diaz told NBC New York Diago had been spending time recently with the “wrong crowd,” and said he blamed himself in part for what happened.

Union Police Detective Dan Zieser told TAP Into Union the shooting on Gates Terrace was because of “an isolated drug deal gone bad,” and all suspects, including a juvenile, in the incident were taken iton custody. They were stopped on Route 22 in Scotch Plains, according to the report.

Diaz started a Go Fund Me page to raise funds for the funeral "so that the family can give him the service he deserves.
