19-year-old shot dead in the street in Union
UNION TOWNSHIP (Union) — A 19-year-old man from Elizabeth was killed by gunfire in the street on Sunday afternoon.
Union Police Detective Dan Zieser told TAP Into Union the shooting on Gates Terrace was because of "an isolated drug deal gone bad" and all suspects, including a juvenile, in the incident were taken in custody. They were stopped on Route 22 in Scotch Plains, according to the report.
The teen's uncle, Candido Morales-Diaz, identified the deceased to NBC New York as Jose Yampier Diago, 19. Morales-Diaz told the station Diago had been spending time recently with the "wrong crowd," and said he blamed himself in part for what happened.
Neighbors told RLS Metro Breaking News a vehicle pulled up to Diago and fired multiple times. A weapon was later found, according to NBC New York.
