A wildfire that has burned nearly 500 acres in Burlington County on Thursday was 60 percent contained early Friday morning, but could be smelled throughout much of Ocean County.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service reported the fire in the Bass River State Forest broke out late in the afternoon near Munion Field Road and Dans Bridge Road near the Garden State Parkway. It is a thickly wooded area with no nearby structures or houses.

NJ Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Robert Geist said responders will continue fire fighting efforts today. 50 personnel, 8 trucks and 1 tractor plow were involved acccording to Geist.

Winds from the south-southeast, however, were still bringing the smell of fire into Ocean County Friday, according to meteorlogist Dan Zarrow. The Monmouth County Sheriff's Office, Eatontown's Office of Emergency Management and Wanamassa Fire Company were among those tweeting about the smell.

The smoke was also creating a haze in some places.

Zarrow said that fairly humid air and very light winds had lessened the wildfire threat in New Jersey.
