BRIDGEWATER — A fatal stabbing may have been the reason behind a road closure in Somerset County on Monday night.

Washington Valley Road in Bridgewater was closed between Crim Road and Tullo Road for "ongoing police activity," according to an alert issued by Bridgewater Police. The road has since reopened.

News 12 New Jersey reported a "special needs child" stabbed family members, while Telemundo 47 reported via Twitter that the boy's mother was killed and his father, seriously injured.

A suspect barricaded himself inside the home leading to a standoff with police, according to NBC 4 New York.and talked him out of the house after several hours.

Residents told the Bridgewater Patch they saw a lot of police activity in the area and a SWAT team in the neighborhood.

A message for Bridgewater Police has not yet been returned.
