Bruce Springsteen sings in “Darkness on the Edge Of Town” that “Everybody’s got a secret. “ The job of Bruce and all other writers is to tap into that secret inside of you. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard song lyrics clearly state the viewpoint that was so cloudy in my thoughts.

One example comes from “Thunder Road”, “It’s a town full of losers, I’m pulling out of here to win”.  To a transplanted 15 year old from an Italian Hispanic neighborhood in Union City where you made your own reputation, who ended up in Marlboro where you were defined by how much money your family made. those words rang true. Add to that people telling me I was never going to amount to anything if I didn’t change my outlook and I was hooked.

I was never much of a fan of Bruce growing up since I was more into British invasion, but my friends were, especially Glenn Stuart who would go on to sing for the B Street band. Many times after we’d be out, since I was the one in our group with the car, I’d drop him off and as teenagers we’d talk about our dreams. I wanted to be a radio star and he wanted to be Bruce Springsteen. It turned out we both got what we wanted simply by following the Boss' advice.
