Rutgers Trustees Reject Merger That Nixes Camden

The Rutgers University Board of Trustees has voted to reject any merger proposal that would result in the loss of its Camden campus.

The board voted 32 to 4 Thursday to reject any merger plan that would sever the Camden campus from Rutgers. The resolution says the school will remain open to alternative proposals only if Rutgers-Camden remains part of Rutgers University.

Gov. Chris Christie has proposed reconfiguring the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Rutgers and Rowan University.

The plan calls for a takeover of Rutgers-Camden by Rowan, based in Glassboro, and the break-up of UMDNJ, with its medical school going to Rutgers-New Brunswick and its remaining parts being renamed.
