Dane Miller scored 12 to help Rutgers hold off Dartmouth 62-56 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

With a lineup that included six freshmen, Rutgers youth was quickly on display as it spurted to an eight-point advantage just five minutes into the game. Dartmouth caught up to tie at 15, and Rutgers went back up by nine before going off with a one-point lead at the half.

The home team shot well (11-for-20) in the opening half but was hampered by nine turnovers.

Rutgers came out to start the second half by scoring six straight points, and the Big Green finally got as close as three points in the final minute of the game.

Dartmouth, 5-23 a year ago, opened its season with a loss for the seventh straight year. Rutgers is coming off a 15-17 season. R.J. Griffin led Dartmouth with 15 points.
