NEW BRUNSWICK — A mechanical fire on the rooftop of Rutgers' Civic Square Building closed the building on Friday morning.

According to an alert issued by Rutgers Police, the mechanical fire was extinguished but the building will remain closed until noon.

Employees who work in the building were told not to report to work until the building has been reopened. Essential services personnel must report to the Civic Square Building as directed.

The building on Livingston Avenue opened in 1995 and is home to the Department of Visual Arts. According to the school's website, the building has fully equipped studios for painting, film and video, and photography. It also includes the Mason Gross Galleries.

The university did not comment on whether any of the facilities were damaged.
