MIDDLETOWN — A Christian Brothers Academy brother was struck and killed Wednesday as he crossed a busy road for his daily walk.

Middletown Police said the pedestrian, whose identity they have not disclosed, was struck early Wednesday afternoon crossing Newman Springs Road in the Lincroft section of the Monmouth County township.

An email to the school community from CBA's school president, Brother Frank Byrne, identified the victim as Brother James Leahy. It said Leahy was a recently retired member of CBA who liked to take daily walks at Thompson Park across the street from the school.

An accompanying photo of Leahy from the faculty directory indicated he had turned 88 in September. A number of comments in other news outlets about the incident mentioned "Father James" as well."

The Asbury Park Press reported that the driver of the car was co-operating with police.

CBA is a private boys Catholic high school established in 1959 with an enrollment of just over 1,000 students according to the school's website.
