Report: Suspect in college student’s death charged in another murder

A 20-year-old Orange man who has been charged with strangling a New Jersey City University student has been charged in the death of another woman, according to a report on NJ.com.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray told NJ.com that Khalil Wheeler-Weaver was charged Friday in the death of Joanne Brown, 33, whose body was found in a house in vacant house on Highland Avenue in Orange on Dec. 5. She was reported missing in late October.

Wheeler-weaver is also charged with murder in the death of Sarah Butler, who was a student at NJCU.

Both women were strangled.

Butler, who lived on campus in Jersey City but is from Montclair, was reported missing to the Montclair Police Department on Nov. 23. Police discovered her body in Eagle Rock Reservation in West Orange on Dec. 1.

Wheeler-Weaver pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of murder and disturbing human remains and was being held in lieu of $1 million bail for Butler's death.

Murray told NJ.com that with the additional charges related to Brown's murder, bail was increased to $5 million.
