Plumsted Switches Utilities To Save Residents Money [AUDIO]

An Ocean County town has become the first in New Jersey to collectively switch the electric provider for all residents, who expect to save an average of $165 per household over the next year.

Plumsted Township Mayor Dave Leutwyler says they did their homework, and a hired consultant found "Con Edison Solutions" to sell residents power through lines still maintained by Jersey Central Power and Light.

"This is a guaranteed rate for 12 months. It was 15 percent lower."

He says Plumstead residents, who want out of the agreement, can do so at any time, and if there are any service problems or disruptions, the locals can still call JCP&L.

"I've had some phone calls, different members of our committee have had phone calls from different townships. It seems like the interest is starting to grow."

Plumsted was able to switch providers under a state law that has been on the book for ten years.

They began a one-year contract that began in January.

Plumsted also held a big meeting with a big turnout among residents who had a lot of questions about this, according to Leutwyler. The move affects only the township residential customers.
