The New Jersey state Senate has failed in its effort to override Gov. Chris Christie's veto of a bill to allow in-person early voting.

The Senate voted 24-16 on Thursday in favor of the override, which fell three votes short.

The bill would have set up early voting at up to seven locations in each county during a two-week period before election days.

But Christie says an estimated $25 million cost in the first year would have made it too expensive.

He vetoed the measure last month.

New Jersey does offer mail-in ballots.
