A northern New Jersey man escaped serious injury when his sport utility vehicle was hit by a New Jersey Transit train.

But 32-year-old Jose Evangelista of Passaic was cited by police for interference of transportation and disregard of a railroad crossing in connection with Wednesday morning's accident in Elmwood Park.

NJ Transit officials say Evangelista could not get his vehicle off the tracks on the Main/Bergen/Port Jervis line due to traffic ahead of his SUV. The crossing gates then came down, and the No. 1158 train hit the passenger side of his vehicle around 8:40 a.m.

Evangelista was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for a cut to his head and later released.

None of the 450 passengers on the Hoboken-bound train were injured in the accident.
