Lawmakers may clear way for Christie book deal

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey lawmakers are once again considering reviving a bill that would clear the way for Gov. Chris Christie to profit from a book deal while in office.

Current state law prohibits the potential 2016 candidate from receiving pay or royalties from sources other than his day job.

An early version of a bill proposed earlier this year would have scrapped that restriction in exchange for pay raises for judges and legislative staffers. Christie's cabinet members would have also seen their pay increase.

Assemblyman John Burzichelli, who sponsored that bill, said there's interest in reviving it. But he says it's too soon to say what might be included.

Books have long been popular campaign precursors.

A Christie spokesman declined to comment.
