A south Jersey dog may owe its life to a pair of good Samaritan truckers who pulled over to help after an accident on Route 295 — as the car the dog was in burst info flames.

According to a report by 6abc, Ron Legault, 66, of Lawnside, was taking dog Riker for radiation treatment Tuesday when smoke started billowing out of the car.

Trucker Ken Lear pulled over to help, and learned that while Legault had gotten out, Riker was still trapped in the backseat. Lear helped a distraught Legault get the husky out. He and a second trucker who stopped, Texas native Jeff Norwood, grabbed their fire extinguishers and emptied them, but they get the fire out, the report said.

"You could see the flames start coming out. The whole front of the car was engulfed in flames," Norwood said, according to the report. "I helped him figure out how to make the 911 call and it was a stressful situation for him. I understand that. And he was worried about it being his daughter's car."

Firefighters arrived soon after to extinguish the flames, the report said. 6ABC spoke briefly to Legault by phone as he headed out of his house to take Riker for a brain tumor treatment. He described the truck drivers as "awesome."
