"Make It Funky, Part 1" by James Brown
(#10 last week) 1971 was a nice year for James: he follows up the local #1 hit "Hot Pants" with this jam.
- 9
"Smiling Faces-Sometimes" by The Undisputed Truth
(#6 last week) The Temptations recorded this first, but this one-hit wonder band got the hit.
- 8
"Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers
(#8 last week) Short but sweet: I'll never forget how DJ Dan Ingram strung all those "I knows" together.
- 7
"The Night Thery Drove Old Dixie Down" by Joan Baez
(#8 last week) The Band's gem reinterpreted by the great folk singer Joan Baez, scoring her biggest hit.
- 6
"Spanish Harlem" by Aretha Franklin
(#3 last week) Ben E. King did it first in 1960, but the remake did even better, getting to #1 locally. 2014: Aretha's new covers album drops on September 30.

"Stick-Up" by The Honey Cone
(#5 last week) Awesome followup to "Want Ads", just as catchy, in my opinion.
- 4
"Superstar" by The Carpenters
(#7 last week) Haunting Leon Russell song. Karen never sounded more beautiful or sad.
- 3
"Go Away Little Girl" by Donny Osmond
(#2 last week) Arrgghhhhhh
- 2
"Maggie May" by Rod Stewart
(#4 last week) Its late September! Go back to school.

"Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" by Paul & Linda McCartney
(#1 last week; 3rd week at #1) Reminded many of his "Revolver" & "Sgt. Pepper"-era work. First post-Beatles #1 single.
