What started as a leisurely walk through the Columbia Trail in Morris County's Long Valley became a much scarier experience when a man was bitten by a coyote.

The 66-year-old was walking on the trail with two other people and their dogs when they encountered the coyote. The animal proceeded to bite the man on his "buttocks and right calf" until the man used a stick to stop the attack.

After help came from the Morris County Park Police Department the coyote was euthanized. The victim was treated at the scene but refused further treatment preferring to manage his own care.

Animal control was also called to bring the coyote to state officials for rabies testing.
