Burlington Township Man Given Medal 66 Years After Capture
A New Jersey man has been given the federal Prisoner of War Medal 66 years after he was captured as an 18-year-old soldier in Germany.
The medal was created in 1995, but Alan Hayden says he only recently learned about it. U.S. Rep. Christopher Smith awarded it to the 85-year-old former camera salesman in a ceremony at his retirement home in Burlington Township Monday.
Smith describes Hayden's time in captivity as "64 days in Hell."
Hayden was captured by German forces in Alsace-Lorraine in February 1945 and freed by Americans more than two months later.
