The suspect was arrested Friday morning and charged with aggravated assault and weapons offenses. His name has not been released because of his age.

Authorities say an investigation by 90 officers produced an identification of the suspect late Thursday evening, but he was not found at his residence. Mayor Steven Fulop says the boy surrendered in the company of his parents Friday morning.

The 5-year-old was shot in the abdomen near the Salem Lafayette housing complex on Wednesday afternoon. He underwent successful surgery at Jersey City Medical Center.

It wasn't clear what sparked the shooting, but neighbors say they saw people running through the streets and heard shots being fired.
