It's not yet clear what sparked the rampage. Authorities say 49-year-old Francis Adolf left writings indicating he intended to harm himself and family members, but did not provide further details.

Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton says Pitman police officers went to the home around 10 a.m. Tuesday to do a welfare check. Inside they found Adolf, his 44-year-old wife, Bonnie, and the couple's 6-year-old son, Francis Jr.

Dalton said investigators are working to determine the cause and manner of the deaths. He did not say what may have been used to commit the killings.

Dalton said there was no reported domestic violence history between the Adolfs.
