Woman dead, state trooper badly hurt in Route 55 crash

Update: Trooper Frankie Williams, 31, of the Port Norris Station died at Cooper University Hospital in Camden Monday night.

MILLVILLE — A woman was killed and a State Police trooper was seriously injured in a crash on Route 55 Monday night.

In a tweet Monday, State Police said the trooper was taken to an area hospital. State Police did not identify the woman or trooper in messages online Monday night.

News chopper images by ABC 6 in Philadelphia showed two vehicles badly damaged.

In a Tweet shortly after 9 p.m., the New Jersey State PBA expressed condolences to the state police "on their loss," though officials had not confirmed any fatalities other than the woman involved in the crash.

State Police said more information would be released shortly.

As of 11 p.m. Monday, the state Department of Transportation reported an accident investigation was continuing on the highway, shutting it down in both directions between Exit 24 for Route 49 and Exit 21 for Schooner Landing Road.
