Could New Jersey's bear hunt, scheduled to end on Saturday, be extended?

As of Friday morning 390 bears had been harvested with the most kills coming in Sussex County. Carole Stanko, the acting chief for the Bureau of Wildlife Managementtold NJ 101.5 earlier this week that if the New Jersey bear population – estimated to be 3,500 – isn’t cut by 20 percent by the end of the hunt, the hunt could continue for a set period of time.

"In all likelihood, we will not have a determination on the extension of the bear hunt until Sunday," said Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Bob Considine.

Thanks to spring like weather and a larger bear population this year's bear hunt had the most kills since at least 2012.

The bear hunt is currently scheduled to end on Saturday at sundown.
