Many callers said that stricter punishments or the death penalty would help decrease the murder rate. John, a caller from Hackettstown, expressed this popular opinion when he said jail time simply isn't drastic enough to deter people from killing.

Kathy in Hamilton shared my sentiment that this is a cultural problem, and not one whose solution can be legislated. "There's money to be made in illegal gun sales," she said, which means laws will only hinder law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves.

Rob, a 25-year-old from Denville, said education will help prevent a future generation of criminals.
