One of the principal ways of losing your elected position is not to piss off elderly voters.

And the way to not piss them off is to refuse to pass a law that would require they be retested for their drivers’ licenses.

Time and time again it’s come up that elderly drivers need to be retested.

One only need google “elderly driver” and you can see the havoc they cause when they’re involved in a automobile mishap – especially if they accidentally drive into a storefront. My friend Jimmy at the Gordon’s Corner Bus Stop has the reprint of an article written when someone drove into his storefront some years ago. This seems to happen more often than not when it comes to elderly drivers.

And when it does, the elderly resist the call to be retested.

This generally leaves the decision up to the family to take the car keys away from either mom or dad – or both.

As CBS2 reported, another such case took place last night when a car, driven by an elderly man, drove straight into the Hudson Mall in Jersey City, and kept on going until it smashed into the entrance of a vacant store.

Here’s a video of what had taken place in the aftermath of the accident.

Do you feel it’s enough just to let family members make the decision to take the car keys away from elderly family members; or should the MVC begin retesting elderly drivers? Does someone need to get critically injured or die before that happens?
