Authorities in Essex County are investigating the cause of a fire that killed an 18-year-old man early Thursday morning.

According to a statement from Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray,  Jeremiah Maxfield was killed in the blaze, which erupted just before 2 a.m. on Arverne Terrace.

Flames spread through the two-story, wood frame, single family home, authorities said. Two other people who were in the home when the fire broke out were able to escape, but Maxfield was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:25 a.m., police said in a statement.

The prosecutor said the cause of the blaze has not yet been determined. The investigation is active and being conducted by the Crash and Fire Investigations Unit of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
