TCNJ announced the retirement Friday.

Hamilton was a 1975 graduate of the university then known as Trenton State College, and was an All-American football player. He became a graduate assistant after graduation, then head coach in 1977.

His teams went to the NCAA Division III playoffs five times during his 35-year career.

TCNJ officials said in April that they had been told about a verbal confrontation between its football coaches and Kean University police officers after a game in November. The Times of Trenton reported that Hamilton was being suspended for the first two games of the 2013 season for his actions.
