State officials want a Paterson nonprofit that oversees government-funded child care to repay nearly $700,000 it spent on "disallowed" items, including $250,000 put in a deferred compensation account for its former executive director.

The state Department of Human Services also found the 4Cs of Passaic County improperly charged the state for long-term-care insurance for an employee's spouse and claimed travel expenses that shouldn't have been covered.

The Record of Woodland Park reports the department wants $679,416 in reimbursements for costs it says were claimed improperly in 2008 and 2009. Officials also are reviewing other years of state contracts with the group.

The 4Cs had a $34.5 million operating budget in 2010, with the bulk of that coming from state and federal funds.

4Cs Board Chairman Keith Darragh declined comment.
