NEWARK — Officials say a retired New York City Police detective wounded two suspects who tried to rob her.

It was one of two reporting shootings involving law enforcement over night in Essex County.

Police say the 43-year-old, who retired nine months ago, was getting into her vehicle on Thursday night when she was approached by two men who brandished a gun and demanded money.

The detective opened fire, wounding 22-year-old Tahje Hunt and 27-year-old Brian Moore, who fled on foot. The Newark residents were apprehended and taken to a hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

The men are charged with robbery and other charges. It is not known if they have lawyers who could comment.

Police recovered a replica gun.

The retired detective's name was not released.

On Friday morning, an off-duty Essex County corrections officer was involved in a shooting that injured one person in Irvington, officials said. Prosecutors did not release details on the circumstances of that shooting.
